Acupuncture For Stress Management | Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS)
Acupuncture works well for stress management in the same way it works well for so many other issues. By calming and normalizing the signals in the nervous system, acupuncture brings the body back into balance.
There are two divisions of the autonomic nervous system; the sympathetic (fight or flight) and the parasympathetic (rest and digest). Most of us spend way too much time in fight or flight and not enough time resting and digesting. In general, stress is okay if we recover from it. Endless deadlines, goals, traffic, intense workouts, arguments, personality conflicts, noise and many other things can contribute to stress disorders. Most of the time we are unconscious of how worked up we are and how long we sustain the pace until we start to break down. The breakdown can show up as insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, depression and other physical issues as well.
Vagus Nerve Stimulation with Electro-Acupuncture can help with many stress and inflammatory disorders. The vagus nerve (10th Cranial Nerve) is a two-way street between the brain and the body. It transmits the signals from the brain to the body to signal time for rest and recovery. It also reports the state of the body back to the brain. Chronic stress can reduce the ability of the vagus nerve to relax the body and organs including the heart and digestive system. Studies link inhibition of the vagus nerve to heart disease, inflammatory bowels, rheumatoid arthritis, and other auto-immune disorders. Many clients measure the success of vagus nerve stimulation treatments by measuring heart rate variability (HRV). Heart rate variability is the beat-to-beat interval between heartbeats. Heart rate variability improves as the tone in the vagus nerve improves. HRV has recently been recognized as an important indicator to estimate the degree of resistance toward stress.
Regular acupuncture treatments can help all of these problems. During the acupuncture treatment, it’s common to have deep relaxation and peaceful rest. This is a healthy state of balance. Over time, acupuncture helps the patient become more relaxed, healthy, and balanced. When this occurs, symptoms begin to disappear. This not only shows up as stress reduction, but the patients body processes and cycles will begin to normalize as health and a peaceful mind return.

I’ve pushed my body to its limits with nearly 20 years in the NHL. Todd helped me by working on some tight, over-trained muscles. Todd’s deep muscle and fascia work also helped get me through some tough pre-season training. I would recommend Todd to family, friends and team mates.IAN LAPERRIÈRE
Todd has an ability to identify and work out small problems before they become big problems. Regular treatments are as important to my training and injury prevention as any exercises I do at the gym or track. I’d recommend Todd to any athlete who wants to train consistently and without pain.ERIN DONOHUE
I was shocked at the immediate relief I hadn’t had in years! From back injuries, to hips, shoulders and more, Todd has yet to let me down and has treated each with the same great results consistently. I feel like a “new” person when I walk out of his office! My muscles, joints and tendons are ready for some more action on the mat!BRAD DADDIS
